Wk14 – Classmate Conversation – Cindy Le

This week I met Cindy Le! She is a currently second year and a Prebiology major. Her hobbies include drawing and playing the violin. She specifically draws anime or animals and has been playing the violin for seven years. She also enjoys gaming such as the recent Pokemon games. Random fact, she chose the grass type Pokemon, Rowlette as her starter! Cindy commutes from Westminster and doesn’t drive like myself lol. I asked her what her favorite food was and she said that she can eat anything, but was currently craving sushi at the time of class. Her favorite color is blue and plays badminton sometimes. We also talked a bit about what anime we like! We both enjoy sports themed anime. In the year 2036, Cindy believes that the tuition will be super expensive. I honestly would not be surprised if that turns out to be the case lol.

Wk13 – Classmate Conversation – Ana Maya

This week I talked to Ana Maya! Ana is a sophomore majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Spanish. Her hobbies include taking pictures and claims that she is not too good at it but would like to get better. She also likes learning new languages, or just small phrases. In 2014, Ana started to learn Portuguese after the World Cup because she wanted to know what the Brazilian football players were saying in their interviews. I can totally relate to that because that’s similar to why I self taught myself Japanese. She was born in Mexico, but raised in Southern California. Ana hates hot weather, so tends to favor rainy, chilly days over sunshine. To my surprise, Ana doesn’t really like sweet stuff. She does not really like cake,  but likes sour candy and Mexican candies lol. Ana, like myself, is also scared to drive, but knows she has to learn because of work. For the question of the week about the red pill or the blue pill, Ana said that she would choose the red pill because she would rather live in the real world than have a fake happiness that was not genuine.

Wk11- Classmate Conversation – Monica Lock

This week at the SOA Galleries I met Monica! She is currently a third year business major. Monica was born and raised in Long Beach and is Cambodian like myself! She took one class in Khmer at CSULB. She can speak basic Khmer while I can only understand very little Khmer lol. We asked each other what kind of sports we participated in and in high school, Monica did badminton. Her favorite type of food is pasta (yum!). My favorite type of food is fruit and more specifically, strawberries. The funny thing is that while I love strawberries, Monica hates it and my least favorite fruit is apples and that is her favorite lol! I asked Monica what her go to drink is at Starbucks and it is a caramel macchiato upside down. She only drinks coffee on the weekends though because once she drinks coffee, she can’t sleep the next day so she drinks it when she can afford to lose sleep. Also like myself, Monica is deathly afraid of driving! The difference between us though is that she actually drives still and commutes to school. She has taken the bus before and probably prefers that to driving lol. Her favorite color is purple, but does not really wear it. About the topic of the Demi Lovato fan art, Monica has actually never drawn or looked at fan art so she didn’t really have an opinion to the topic. Monica’s favorite quote that she tries to live by is “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

Wk8 – Classmate Conversation – Tommy Duong

This week I met Tommy! Tommy is a second year at CSULB like myself, is from Westminster, and double majors in social work and health science. He currently does not have a dream job and is still thinking about what he would like to do. At the Japanese garden, I noticed that he had a big camera with him so I asked him if it was his hobby and he said that photography is one of his hobbies. Tommy’s other hobbies include graphic design and gaming. He plays Overwatch like me and I asked if he likes Pokemon because there is a new one coming out, but Tommy said that he can’t get into Pokemon anymore lol. I can kind of agree though, after so many generations of Pokemon, the hype does die down just a little bit. Another thing that we have in common is that we are the youngest of our siblings. Tommy is the youngest of three brothers while I am the youngest of five siblings. The question of the week that we asked each other was, “Would you be supportive of your child wanting to pursue an art career? Why or why not?” Tommy answered that he would be supportive because no matter what they are your kid, but would still discourage them a little because a career in art is so unpredictable.

Wk3 – Classmate Conversation – Raylyn Diep

This week I was able to talk to Raylyn! She is currently an undeclared second year, but is going to go into biochemistry eventually. She graduated from Fountain Valley High School and is a commuter like myself. Her hobby is watching Netflix and is currently watching “Dexter.” Another thing Raylyn likes to do is go to the movies. She goes every 2-3 weeks and likes superhero movies. She does not have a specific favorite food but her favorite type is Korean and Chinese food. Raylyn’s favorite color is any shade of blue! It was funny hearing that after I gave a super specific color lol. Her favorite animal is a narwhal. I love coffee, but Raylyn is definitely not a coffee fan. Her alternative to coffee is smoothies! She makes some every week. Raylyn is a Korean pop music fan and has spent a lot of money on the artists and bands that have come overseas to perform. We both really like anime and manga! Our favorite genre is shoujo. She dislikes magical girl which is one of my favorite genres, but that’s okay lol. She is also a fan of adventure type of anime such as One Piece or Fairy Tail. We both had the same recent favorite anime which was Boku Dake ga Inai Machi or ERASED. It was super popular when it was airing so I’m not surprised to find a fellow fan of it! We also talked about Japanese and Korean dramas and she recommended me a Korean drama that would make me cry every episode called “Uncontrollably Fond.” I plan to watch it eventually when I have time. We actually forgot to take our picture together on the day of our class so we were able to meet up on Friday to take one lol. Thanks Raylyn!

Wk2 – Classmate Conversation – Aleah Lomeli

This week I was able to meet Aleah! This is her first year at CSULB and she is a social work major. I was very happy to meet her because she is a fellow cheerleader! She has been doing competitive cheerleading for fourteen years and since she just turned eighteen on May 28th, that is more than half of her life which I think is amazing! Similarly, we both cheer in our free time. Cheerleading takes up so much time there really isn’t that much room to do anything else lol. Aleah’s regular order from Starbucks is a passion tea so I think I’ll try that next time. Another thing Aleah and I have in common is that we both don’t have jobs and we don’t really want one haha! Something that we are opposites in is that I am the youngest child and she is the oldest. Also, I have more brothers than Aleah, but she has more sisters than me. Aleah thinks that art is important because of the freedom an artist has to interpret their ideas the way they want to and to express themselves.

Wk1 – Classmate Conversation – Roxana Chavez

On the first day of class I had the pleasure of meeting Roxana! Roxana and I were grouped together for a portion of the class and decided to “interview” each other for the classmate conversation. I say interview in quotes because it felt more like talking to a friend instead of just asking questions and getting answers haha. Roxana is a second year and CSULB and majors in Health Care Administration. We are similar in that we both thought about doing nursing at first but couldn’t continue with it. We still wanted to help people though and decided that HCA was the best for doing that even if it is not direct help such as a doctor or nurse. Roxana doesn’t have a specific favorite color but loves neutral colors. Her hobby is also similar to one of mine! We both like to go shopping and sometimes forget to check the price tag when checking out whoops! The question that the class came up with was “Where do you draw the line at art?” and Roxana didn’t draw the line anywhere. She thinks that art is subjective and can mean anything. One person can consider some piles of junk art and one person may not so it all about personal views. I had a lot of fun getting to make a new friend in class!
